I took a few hours out of my holiday today to catalogue the animal mummies at Plymouth City Museum. In total, the collection includes 15 mummies including birds, crocodiles and mammals. All the mummies have been incorporated into the Bio Bank database along with a new digital photographic record of each specimen. Samples were taken from 12 of the specimens where there were damaged areas or associated loose debris.
The curator and conservators at Plymouth have worked hard to ensure the artefacts are well cared for, with many having received conservation care over the past few months. It was lovely to see some of these animals on display alongside radiographic images to give the public a real insight into the contents of the bundles.
I look forward got working closely with Plymouth over the coming months to study their collection in more detail!
