Ancient mummies meet modern animals at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Liverpool

The Bio Bank team had a fascinating day today visiting the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Liverpool. Nestled in the leafy suburb of Neston, the faculty is THE place to study veterinary medicine in the UK. The reason for our visit was to discuss our work with staff at the faculty and to establish whether we might be able to work together to examine faunal remains from ancient Egypt. It can be incredibly difficult to determine species, age, sex, pathology and cause of death from ancient remains, particularly when we rely on radiographic imaging rather than looking directly at the actual physical remains themselves. We very much hope that we will be able to work alongside specialist veterinarians in the future to unlock more of the mummies’ secrets!
